No Flowers

from No Flowers by Paul Roub

I wrote this for my wedding. People have asked where they can get a copy. Here, now.

You said “no flowers”
So I brought you none
But I’ll plant you hundreds
Before this year is done

You said “no presents”
And I understand
I’ll give you nothing you can
Hold in your hands

You’re better with bows and ribbons and curls, anyway
And everything soon becomes something to be put away
I give you my shoulder, I give you my hand
I give you myself
For as long as you can stand

You once said “no cards”
So I wrote this all out
With some time and a magnifying glass
You’ll figure it out

You said “nothing sweet”
From the candy store shelves
So let’s get everything wrong as we
Try to make it ourselves

I asked you please do
You said I will
All these days later you said
You do still

All of the presents
We need today
Stood by our side as we
Said what we wanted to say
